Easy Overnight Oats Recipe

Hey friends, it’s Jessika from Boldy Recipes! If you’ve been following my blog, you know I’m obsessed with overnight oats. This is my go-to basic recipe that I’ve made literally hundreds of times it’s foolproof, endlessly customizable, and takes just 5 minutes to prep. Whether you’re new to overnight oats or just looking for a reliable formula, this is the recipe I always come back to. Let me show you exactly how I make them.

Easy Overnight Oats Recipe

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Chill Time: 8 hours (or overnight)
Total Time: 8 hours 5 minutes
Servings: 1

Ingredients

Base:

  • ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • ⅓ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds (optional but recommended)

Optional Toppings (add in the morning):

  • Fresh berries
  • Sliced banana
  • Chopped nuts or almonds
  • Granola
  • Nut butter drizzle
  • Shredded coconut

Instructions

Step 1: Combine the Base Ingredients

In a mason jar or airtight container, add your milk first. If using chia seeds, stir them into the milk and let sit for 2-3 minutes this prevents clumping and allows them to start absorbing liquid.

Step 2: Add Remaining Ingredients

Add the Greek yogurt, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and salt to the jar. Stir well until everything is combined and smooth. The yogurt should be fully incorporated, not sitting in clumps.

Step 3: Add the Oats

Pour in the rolled oats and give everything a thorough stir, making sure all the oats are submerged in the liquid. Use a spoon to press down any dry oats floating on top.

Step 4: Refrigerate Overnight

Seal the container tightly with a lid. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or overnight. I usually prep mine around 9 PM and eat them at 7 AM perfect timing.

Step 5: Enjoy

In the morning, give the oats a good stir. They should be thick, creamy, and spoonable. If they’re too thick, add a splash of milk. If too thin, stir in a tablespoon of dry oats.

Add your favorite toppings and enjoy cold, or microwave for 60-90 seconds if you prefer them warm.

My Expert Tips

Check the consistency before refrigerating. The mixture should look slightly soupy the oats will absorb a lot of liquid overnight. If it looks too thick before chilling, add another tablespoon of milk.

Don’t skip the salt. Even though it’s just a pinch, it makes a huge difference in bringing out all the flavors, even in sweet oats.

Use plain yogurt, not flavored. Flavored yogurts contain excessive sugar and can make your oats overly sweet. Control the sweetness yourself.

Shake before storing. After mixing, I give my jar a good shake with the lid on to ensure everything’s evenly distributed.

Flavor Variations I Love

From this basic recipe, you can create endless variations:

Chocolate Peanut Butter: Add 1 tablespoon cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon peanut butter to the base

Apple Cinnamon: Add 1 teaspoon cinnamon and ¼ cup diced apple to the base

Berry Vanilla: Add ¼ cup freeze-dried berries at night, fresh berries in the morning

Banana Bread: Mash half a banana into the base, add ½ teaspoon cinnamon and pinch of nutmeg

Tropical: Use coconut milk, add 2 tablespoons shredded coconut and diced mango in the morning

Meal Prep Method

I make five jars every Sunday for the work week. Simply multiply the recipe by however many servings you need and divide among individual containers. They stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Label your jars with the date so you know which to eat first. Store toppings separately and add them each morning for best texture.

Storage and Serving

Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days

Freezer: Not recommended the texture becomes grainy when thawed

Serving: Eat cold straight from the fridge, or warm in the microwave for 60-90 seconds

I eat mine straight from the mason jar to minimize cleanup, but you can certainly transfer to a bowl if you prefer.

Nutritional Benefits

This basic recipe provides approximately 350 calories with 15 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber, and healthy complex carbohydrates. The combination keeps me full and energized all morning without any crashes.

FAQs

Q: Can I use steel-cut oats instead?
A: No, steel-cut oats stay too hard. Only old-fashioned rolled oats work properly for overnight oats.

Q: Do I have to use yogurt?
A: No, but I highly recommend it for creaminess and protein. Without yogurt, use ⅔ cup milk total instead.

Q: Can I make this dairy-free?
A: Absolutely! Use any non-dairy milk and coconut yogurt or skip the yogurt entirely. The recipe works perfectly.

Q: How long do overnight oats last?
A: Up to 5 days in the refrigerator when stored in an airtight container. I meal prep a week’s worth every Sunday.
